Daily cleaning done right: brushing and flossing
Most people brush every day - few do it right. The essentials, briefly.
The brush
Two full minutes, twice a day, with short circular strokes at a 45-degree angle toward the gum line. A soft brush, fluoride toothpaste, and a new brush every three months.
Flossing
The brush cannot reach between the teeth, where most decay starts. Slide floss gently along the sides of each tooth, once a day, ideally before bed.
Common mistakes
- Brushing hard injures gums and wears enamel.
- Rinsing with lots of water after brushing weakens the fluoride effect.
- Neglecting the tongue.
