Dental health
Your child's teeth: from the first tooth to the first dental visit
Baby teeth are not temporarily important - early care protects the permanent teeth before they even appear.
The first visit
The first dental visit is advised with the first tooth or before the first birthday - a calm introductory visit that builds a positive relationship with the clinic.
Daily care
Wipe the infant's gums with clean gauze, and with the first tooth use a small soft brush with a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste until age three, then a pea-sized amount from three to six.
Habits that protect
- Do not leave a bottle in the mouth during sleep.
- Cut juices and sweets between meals.
- Treat decay in baby teeth as worth treating, not worth waiting out.
